Billy Cox and Buddy Miles Reunited
Buddy Miles and Billy Cox, the other two original members
of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys, will reunite to record with
guitarist/songwriter Bruce Cameron on his forthcoming album, Midnight
Daydream This is the first time that Miles and Cox have
recorded original music together with an artist since playing with
Slash and Paul Rodgers on the 1993 release Stone Free: A Tribute
to Jimi Hendrix (Warner/Reprise).
"I was trying to decide who I wanted
to record with and tracked down the Band of Gypsys," says
Cameron, "it's a great honor to play with these guys."
According to Cameron, Miles will sing and Cox will play
bass on the three tracks the trio plan to record together:
"Midnight Daydream", (title track), "Born to
Lose", (a blues song), and "A Thousand Moons"
Ironically, this historic recording will take
place on September 17th, the eve of the 28th anniversary of
Hendrix's |
death. "I first found out about it when
they wrote up the press release," Cameron said, "I don't
think it's distasteful, but it was certainly unintentional."
Plans for a video of the historic recording session are in the works
as well.
Although Cameron cites Hendrix as his major influence
over the years-- "I had all of his records from the first album
on; Electric Ladyland was my favorite, but they're all
great" --he doesn't want fans to think he is trying to be a
"Hendrix clone". "Many guitarists try to sound
exactly like Hendrix" Cameron explains, "but I want to
play in the spirit of Jimi instead. If I sound like him,
it's just because the spirit of his music is floating through my
music."
Other guest musicians contributing to the project
include ANT-BEE, Bunk Gardner of the Mothers of Invention, Ken
Hensley from Uriah Heep, Harvey Dalton Arnold from the Outlaws, and
Michael Bruce and Neal Smith of the Alice Cooper Group. Midnight
Daydream is scheduled for release in September 1999 on Brain
Cell Records.
