I am a producer with Hudson Music, responsible for the many DVDs on Gene
Krupa, Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Neil Peart and various others. We are in
the midst of planning a DVD entitled "Classic Rock and Roll Drum Solos," and
we've been attempting to contact Mitch Mitchell in order to get his
permission to use a clip of him soloing. Any idea how to reach him?

CommentsHey Mitch,
You were the one who had the biggest impact on my playing style.
I was in a car accident in 1983 and haven't played a lick since, but you were always "the man" to me.
The first time I heard Hey Joe on the radio when I was 13 years old, and those things that you did at the end, I about freaked. And the stuff on Voodoo Child, what can I say? I miss you man. What are you doing now?
Please answer if you get a spare minute. I would be so honored.

CommentsHi Mitch,
In my opinion, you are one of the great drummers. Anybody that could keep Jimi in check has to be great. I purchased your book and wonder if there is any way I can get you to sign it for me? I would be honored if you would. It would be a great keepsake with all my other "Experience" music.
Thanks for the music,
Larry.

CommentsShot in the dark perhaps, but I'll take a chance. First off, there's just NO WAY I can describe the positive impact you've had on me, Mitch. And no way to thank you PROPERLY, either. Oh well; the "Reader's Digest" version of my musical journey is a small start. Picked up the sticks at age 8; first kit age 10; first band at 12; semi-pro at 15; pro at 18. 1987 saw the birth of my ultimate vehicle "Cross Town Traffic" - and despite personnell changes akin to Mayall's Bluesbreakers, CTT stayed in the thick of it until last spring. I'm sure we've easily done over 800 shows over the years; everything from State Fairs, to Mississippi jook joints, to big-name jazz and blues festivals all over the Midwest and south - but always with the same sense of musical freedom that you and Jimi perfected (and CTT has always been a trio, too!). No, we never "made the big time" (or, thanks to the perpetual flux state of the band, a proper recorded effort that made release); but we somehow managed to etch a bit of a reputation, which is still there today. $$ wasn't my main motivation - the MUSIC was!! Still is, too!!
In closing, I just have to tell you that I literally wore out a perfectly BEAUTIFUL Premier 7-piece kit because one of our favorite tunes to "stretch out" on was "I Don't Live Today," complete with that wonderful THUNDER at the beginning (which I eventually combined with your "Ezy Rider" intro pattern, for even more thunder!!) 8^) Thanks again, Mitch - I immediately though of you earlier this year, when I got the sad news about Uncle "Hell for Leather" passing away - I was VERY fortunate to have seen him play in '02........... And I sincerely hope I get to see YOU sometime in the future.......;^)
Cheers, Mate!!

I hope you are doing fine and I just wanna tell you that I am a guitarist who was and is still very much influenced by the freedom that Jimi and yourself expressed in your playing...I still catch myself "airdrumming" to your riffs and "feeling" the circular motion of your playing even though I am a guitarist...I hope all your current projects are bringing you the same pleasure and satisfaction as your projects with Jimi did....as I write this, I am listening to The Experience Live at Berkley, 2nd show...great stuff!....take care.

CommentsDear Mitch:
I would like to know whether you would have an interest in collaborating on a project to speculate on what music might have resulted if Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Tony Williams and Jack Bruce had successfully concluded their negotiations and recorded together.
I am making similar inquiries with Jack Bruce (for obvious reasons), and with Wayne Shorter. I am hoping that you will be willing to offer your experiences of discussing jazz and music theory with Jimi, as well as any knowledge he has of actual conversations that took place between Jimi and Miles.
Sincerely,
James Nichols

CommentsHey, Mitch!
This your old band mate from Ramatam, Tommy Sullivan... hope whatever it is you're doing
is bringing you happiness!
I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Tom Dowd - the sessions we did with him in England prior to Ramatam are among my fondest career memories...
I am still blown away by your overdubbing a tuned set of tympanis over the the drum solo on our demo of "Book of Life" and remember with gratitude how
you stood up to the "beaks" (still my favorite definition of music biz execs & lawyers... ) who didn't like the "rich get richer on the backs of the poor"lyrics.
I'm alive & well, still doing a lot of writing, producing, singing & playing ... I'm very proud of the most recent CD I produced, "Peace on Earth", I'd love to send you a copy...
I haven't heard from Mike, but was in semi-in touch with April up to a few years ago - she had a successful career going as a painter last I heard-
and still played her ass off the last time I heard her on a guitar.
If you do see this, please let me know how you're doing ... and if you ever get the itch to jam - even if it's in your living room - I'll be there in a flash!
PS: You still owe me a drum track on Changing Days,
you bastard!

CommentsMitch,
last saw you in Gothenburg, Sweden in September ´67... Two times within ten days in fact! Then I was a kid only, although already deep into music. At that time, anyway, I was not able to take in all the impressions the
Experience's concerts made possible. Jimi on his own, you other guys each on your own, and, the whole unit together. I was a huge fan of the Who at that time - I was 14 years of age back then - and had also seen them then two times already - and though they were a most outstanding act bringing a very new dimension to the music scene, and, also was a complex group to experience live, it
wasn't impossible to do so. With the JHE it was!
Four years later I started playing bass with my first own group. The guitarist, only 17 years old, was until that time the most Jimi Hendrix affected person I had met, and he made me think through the
Experience's music a lot. That is in fact a musically cornerstone of my life! When we split up, I stopped playing for quite a long time, just doing some home practice from and to. In my mid thirties though life had turned the way that I concentrated a bit more seriously again on playing with a band. I
accidentally came aware of a guitarist in Mora, Sweden, who needed a bass player for his Texas blues group and HE was a huge Jimi Hendrix fan, and also had real noticeable skills in performing Jimi´s songs in a way that made them some justice. Then first(!), I too seriously got into playing these songs.
Over the years we then have met and played together, Jimi´s music and other more or less related. Well, I think no music is really related to those songs, but you know, some Stevie Ray Vaughan material and more of his likes. Also I have played sets/songs of the JHE music with other bands or musicians musicians.
But. Not until these cd records took over I bought a record with the JHE!!
That's now ten years ago. Anyway, that started something for me, my wife - yes in fact all of our family. Soon I bought another cd with the JHE. I came listening in a way I
hadn't done before, or to describe it better, I was forced into that way to listen grabbed by the music in a way I had not been capable to be before for any reason I do not know! THAT was a very surprising, strange and overwhelming experience! also considering I then had passed 40 years. I
couldn't understand how and why I had not heard this music before in the way I now did - and thought back on my old teenage friend and guitarist who obviously had noticed this more when he was only 17.
Now, Mitch, I own about 60 or so cd´s with the JHE... Many concerts of course, many with poor sound quality. But, there is no music in rock/blues/soul/funk that anyway can get a hold of me, my mind, my heart and what inner musical rooms I have which corresponds with life, love, reflection, energy, art, limits pushing - etc! like Your music do. Strangely, which I briefly have written already, that goes also for my wife and my oldest son - his now 16. My daughter, 24 years of age, loves this your music too and we play it a lot together (she is a singer), but
she's somewhat more into the new rnb, soul and reggae music. Then my 15 year old son also is a huge JHE fan, teaching his school mates at times on lessons on Jimi and his music - but
he's also into techno and hip-hop quite a lot.
We've been sitting now the last decade listening to your music for so many, many hours, days and evenings. Each time yet it is a new thrill, a new experience in some way.
Jimi was The guitar player of this time. For us, his way with expression the notes he
chose to play has been like balsam, like an understanding doctor's treatment for a sad, distressed and confused soul, seemingly thousands of times. I know there is nothing special with that though - all over this world different people experience this of Jimi´s playing.
And to me, Noel was an amazing bass player! So alive, so clever when that was what was needed, and with that innovative heart which made the band exciting on his behalf -
that's what I think. A wonderful bass player who I sadly have noticed sometimes is under estimated, to me on false aspects!
The drummer then was you, Mitch. And now it's getting hard...
You see, when we listen to your recordings, now since long the focus has became more and more on what you play and how you play. Yes, of course we see/hear the unit wholly, and we still listen to and experience Jimi´s playing in the same way as I have described above. But the drumming work is such a piece of an art masterpiece although heavy and tight in the way Jimi´s songs needed it to be to give justice to them, that we find ourselves very, very often silently sitting listening to these drums alone, only to here and there in between open up for a laugh of joy and sublime impression on how you, Mitch, could play so very into the "red line" of what the song and the Jimi/JHE for-the-day version was about.
I don't wait for another drummer like you. Of course, however, there will never be! I just wanted to, now as
I've became 50 and positively can believe I have some at least authority behind these words, to bring you my whole hearted appreciation and my deepest Thanks!! that you made drumming to what you made it and that you made Jimi´s songs possible to live the way he wanted them to do.
For all future Mitch, in all your doings, I finally will wish you and the ones you have closest to you all the very best!
Thank You,
sincerely, Dan Franck

I recently collaborated with Herbie Hancock drummer Mike Clark to produce his book entitled "Funk Drumming" which showcases his unique drumming style. I did all the transcriptions and an interview which gives the student background info into the inspiration behing the various grooves and rhythmic concepts. It was published last year by Hal Leonard music. I would love to send you a copy as well as discuss whether you might be interseted in creating a Mitch Mitchell drumming book, something that the drumming community would certainly enjoy and benifit from. I am another of those of whom your drumming was a major influence on an I continue to dig it just as much today. I would certainly love to do the project if you would consider it. I know the names and approximate locations of virtually every local player and whom they bring in as well as the phony voice modulation used--prety good for a girl with no computer.

CommentsDear Mitch--
Was a staunch follower of your percussion/sticking cobo technique of rock and jazz when I was a kid 1967. Am making a framed memorial with Are You Experienced, Axis, Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland orig. albums WITH a genuine (certified-PSA/DNA) autograph of you, Noel, and Jimi to a lady you guys met on a flight from London to Goteburh, Sweden by name of "Eva Hedber", signed by all of you the same night Jimi broke his arm before the concert there in Goteburg. Apparantly Jimi took a liking to Eva's bouquet hat!!

CommentsDear Mr. Mitchell I am admiring of the grouping the the one that You were of 1967-69 causes pain to me that a teacher of his stature retires but also already I contribute but that sufficient to the life with its music and person. In name of many fans of Mexico we thank to him for all these years of rock. Ricardo Alonso Monsreal Saldaña.

CommentsMITCHELL!! Been looking for a way to contact you for years. You probably won't remember me out of the thousands of people that you've met, but I'll never forget our meeting in Philadelphia, PA when I came backstage after a show with my younger siblings. I gave you a golden pretzel pin that you wore during the concert. That completely blew me away.
Been druming the past year discovering that I can actually play. Remember telling you that I wanted to but was too shy. You made me sit down at the drumset set up back stage. Think I made a complete fool of myself was scared to DEATH and compeltely tore up.
Speaking of tore up--I apologize for not coming back got the youngins home late and got lumped up by my parents. Oh...yeah the perils of youth huh? Youth is actually quite wasted on the young.
Hit me up with some mail Mitch-It would totally blow me away (AGAIN).
Love and miss you take care,
Carol

CommentsDear Mitch,
Right now, December 16, 2006. Happy holidays to you, wherever you may be, whatever you may be doing. Please know that I have been drumming since 1966, and that you were my first great drumming inspiration and influence. Since getting into jazz I would add Elvin Jones. Your spirit and feeling continue to inform and inspire my playing to this day. I live in Seattle. I have a dream to meet you and shake your hand one day.
Best wishes always, Don Berman in Seattle

CommentsMitch, I think Jimi Hendrix's brother, Leon Hendrix's debut album is great! If you have not heard you really should check it out. He has a MySpace page and a website at www.LeonHendrix.com
I have seen him live. He certainly does a pretty good job of carrying on his brother's style and vibe I must say.
For all others reading this, check out my band at
www.NoManZero.com
our producer has worked with everyone from the Smashing Pumpkins (recording) to Motorhead and Ray Charles (Live Sound) to name a few. Try it, you might like it!

CommentsHi Mitch,
I am the drummer and main composer for the Belgian band Univers Zero. I simply wanted to tell you that I, like so many other people, have been deeply impressed at the age of fifteen when I first listened to Jimi's music and your drumming. I'm still convinced, as I was then, that you and Jimi were example of perfect cohesion. This has strongly influenced my decision to become a musician, and to play to this very day without any compromissions whatsoever..
I would be delighted to send you a CD featuring my band's music...where can I send it?
Thanks a lot for your attention
Cheers.
Daniel Denis
